Thomas & Betts had its beginning in 1898 when Robert McKean Thomas and Hobart D. Betts formed a sales agency in New York City selling conduit for electrical installations. In 1905, they established a New York corporation, Thomas and Betts Company. In 1912, Thomas and Betts Company purchased the Standard Electric Fittings Company of Stamford, Connecticut, and, five years later, in 1917, formed a new corporation, The Thomas & Betts Co.
